Brigham Young University-Hawaii is launching the second phase of its University Solar Project, which will allow the campus to meet 100% of its electrical energy needs through solar. Once completed, the project portfolio will not only power the university but also extend its renewable energy services to the adjacent Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) and the Laie Hawaii Temple.
Phase 2 will feature new ground-mount solar arrays situated southwest of campus, as well as additional solar canopies over a parking lot in the southeast corner of campus near the PCC Pacific Theater. Also included is an energy storage system that BYU-Hawaii says will provide up to five days of emergency battery backup to critical service.
In 2022, the university installed three rooftop solar projects, five solar carports and 7 MWh of energy storage. The initial phase met 39% of the university’s energy demands. Phase 2 should cover the difference.
