Construction and development firm Skanska announced the completion of a decade-long initiative aimed at transforming Skanska USA Civil’s Maspeth Yard into a sustainable facility in Queens, New York. Maspeth Yard operates around the clock as the central hub for housing and maintenance of the construction equipment used in Skanska USA Civil Northeast’s civil operations, as well as its underpinning and foundation projects.
As part of the sustainable overhaul, Core Development Group installed a 299-kW array on the rooftop that will offset around 78% of the facility’s annual electricity usage. The project uses SolarEdge inverters and Qcells solar panels.

“Maspeth Yard continues to drive innovation in construction equipment, integrating smart battery hybrid systems for generators, procuring hybrid yellow iron loaders and, solar light towers to replace diesel-powered units and is now using renewable diesel fuel in our vehicles and equipment dispatched from the yard — further enhancing sustainability, efficiency and safety across Skanska’s projects,” said Steven Weiburg, regional equipment manager for Skanska USA Civil Northeast. “By strategically reducing energy consumption and emissions while optimizing operational workflows, Maspeth is not only cutting costs but also reinforcing Skanska’s commitment to smarter, sustainable infrastructure solutions.”
The company has also transitioned to energy-efficient LED lighting, upgraded air compressors to lower energy consumption and overhauled its boiler system with a three-stage hot water boiler, enhancing reliability and efficiency.
