Distributor AEE Solar to close after 45 years in business

Equipment distributor AEE Solar announced it will close on May 3, 2024. The distributor is now selling off the rest of its inventory at clearance pricing.

AEE Solar was founded in 1979 as Alternative Energy Engineering in rural Redway, California. Solar enthusiast David Katz launched the business from his home and offered products via catalogs. The company specialized in off-grid equipment but became a significant distributor to the residential market in California.

Sunrun acquired AEE Solar in 2014 along with SnapNrack. In AEE Solar’s message to buyers about the upcoming closure, it recommends purchasers contact their territory sales manager to “explore opportunities to purchase directly from SnapNrack going forward.”

The distributor opened a new 140,000-ft2 distribution center in Visalia, California, last year.

AEE was from the old days when the wrenches just wanted to do something worthwhile with their lives. Not become billionaires. God bless all the old soldiers of RE. May they rest in peace.

Wow! That’s too bad. Have seen them for many years if from afar. And Real Goods also closed, right? Did someone bring them back to life or is it my wishful thinking?

Real Goods filed for bankruptcy a few years back. I know this because I was employed there when it happened. They briefly got into the residential solar shingle world but it was unfortunately not successful.

This is thanks to our government; Gavin Newsom destroyed our California Solar Industry when he made deals with the utility companies. Now thousands of employees have lost their job. Absolutely disgusting~ Hopefully California Residents will wake up at election time.
