Arevon Asset Management announced that the 100-MW/400-MWh Saticoy energy storage project in Southern California Edison’s (SCE) territory is now online.
Saticoy was built after the local community decided to forgo a proposed gas peaker plant near the beach in Oxnard. Instead, 142 Tesla Megapacks will supply energy to the grid.
“On hot days when the grid is struggling to keep up, the Saticoy battery storage facility will help keep the lights on and air conditioners running with on-demand, local electricity,” said John Breckenridge, head of Clean Energy Infrastructure at Capital Dynamics. “We’re proud to have worked with Arevon, our asset management affiliate; Strata Clean Energy; the county; and local utility Southern California Edison to improve grid reliability.”
The electricity from the site is supplied to SCE under the terms of a 20-year purchase and sale agreement. The project was developed by Strata Clean Energy.
“Saying no to a gas peaker plant and yes to battery-stored energy has provided our community with a nonpolluting power plant, increased our tax base, and created good jobs and ultimately better health for the people,” said Carmen Ramirez, Ventura County District 5 Supervisor. “This project is truly a testament to Oxnard’s determination and resilience to modernize and better our community.”

Solarman, perhaps less of a sweet spot than a reflection of the limits of the technology. I think the efficiency of those Tesla batteries drop off quickly after 4 hours. Longer term storage is really needed that can handle multiple days of storage.

That’s the thing here, there seems to be some “common wisdom” that energy storage has a ‘sweet spot’ of 4 hours of storage. When it could easily be extended to 6 to 8 hours of energy storage a day. Someone’s not doing their due diligence when designing these things. IF you’re going to replace a Peaker plant, then up the hours of useful energy dispatch each day and use the site for grid services also. Grid voltage and frequency regulation, after hours energy storage as an aggregate service and day ahead energy storage unit. Just because the sun sets, doesn’t mean the ESS isn’t useful for other applications on the grid.
