sonnen releases new 10-kWh home battery for $9,500

Residential battery maker sonnen has released its new compact and affordable sonnenCore battery solution that provides homeowners with a premium sonnen solution in a cost-conscious package.

sonnenCore aims to expand the residential energy storage market with a high-quality, affordable home battery option for any home. sonnenCore is equipped with 4.8 kW/10 kWh of maximum usable capacity and pairs with new and existing PV systems, with an MSRP of $9,500. The system uses cobalt-free lithium-iron phosphate batteries designed for stationary energy storage and backed by sonnen’s factory limited warranty of 10 years/10,000 charge cycles.

sonnen’s newest home battery solution is purpose-built by sonnen and features a new sonnenInverter and a sonnenModule with a custom energy management software (EMS), enabling comprehensive end-to-end system integration and optimization. The innovative sonnenInverter, sonnenModules and custom EMS are certified to a comprehensive list of UL safety and performance standards that comply with regional and national requirements.

The compact, all-in-one, modular configuration of the sonnenCore allows for simplified site design and installation, making it an attractive and cost-effective home battery option for any residential project, including solar retrofits. Additionally, the one-size-fits-all unit’s easily repeatable design and installation makes sonnenCore ideal for standardization and implementation in large national projects, including new home developments and community-based clean energy programs.

“With the increasing demand for energy security and the continuing growth of solar installations across the country, we developed sonnenCore as a smart and affordable battery solution that works for every home,” said Blake Richetta, Chairman and CEO of sonnen. “sonnenCore is designed to be easy for home builders to specify, contractors to install and homeowners to use without compromising on quality and reliability. It is the obvious choice in home battery technology for customers looking to safely keep their lights on, reduce their carbon footprint and become part of a clean energy future.”

Just to let you all know, the lithium battery industry is selling at $100 a kilowatt at the bottom end, so this still roughly a 500-1000% markup outside the packaging and electrics….

Too small and way too expensive.

The industry and the market need more home-storage options as the consumer will only benefit from more competition. When battery costs are more in line with today’s PV prices, it will make economic sense for consumers to go with PV + Storage systems, regardless of what efforts their state monopoly power companies do to devalue rooftop solar.

I’m glad to see Sonnen bring out a cheaper product. Their ecolinx product line has the ability to interact with smart home and appliance energy efficiency for power control in one’s home. The downside, most homes do not have Energy Star smart home appliances and do not need the bells and whistles of the ecolinx product. It does sound like the SonnenCore still has the ability to aggregate for grid interaction in the future. The article did not mention if the SonnenCore could be paralleled like TESLA and LG Chem energy storage systems can. The Sonnen web site doesn’t give a great deal of information on the adaptation and use of the unit itself. They are claiming 100% DoD and 10 years of use, if one can program in a DoD of 80% would this allow 15 years of use like their ecolinx product? Ability to series or parallel two or more systems could be an answer to large homes with larger current needs on average, there was no mention of this on the Sonnen web site. All in all, it is a nice compact package to install in one’s garage. Keep it simple enough and cost effective enough and many housing tracts will see the adoption of this system with or without solar PV in the future.
