Utility Xcel Energy has contracted Northern Reliability of Vermont to build a system that uses Pika Energy power electronics and advanced energy storage to relieve peaking demand on a feeder in Stapleton, Colorado.
Northern Reliability selected Pika Energy inverters and power converters to couple with advanced lithium ion batteries for the Stapleton project. Pika Energy’s products will provide the critical power electronics and energy management functions of the 850kWh system.
“Xcel Energy’s goal is to minimize the impacts of solar on the feeder, reduce the peak demand on the feeder, and reduce its marginal cost of energy by storing power at a lower cost and discharging it at a higher cost,” Beth Chacon of Xcel Energy wrote in Transmission & Distribution World.
