Ameresco has partnered with Cannon Air Force Base (AFB) and the Defense Logistics Agency Energy (DLA Energy) for a $19 million Energy Savings Performance Contract (ESPC) project that includes 1.9 MW of photovoltaic solar, smart controls and other conservation technologies.
Ameresco designed the project to provide tangible facility improvements and enable recurring reductions in utility costs, while converting 4% of Cannon’s electric energy usage to onsite renewable resources. The planned 1.9-MW ground mount solar array and LED lighting retrofits are set to enhance Air Commando Mission night training.
As a result of these upgrades, Cannon Air Force Base will save approximately $1.1 million in the first year alone and $33 million over the course of the performance period.
“We are so honored to work with Cannon Air Force Base on this project to enhance the base’s operational efficiency and provide on-site energy generation,” said Nicole Bulgarino, executive VP and general manager of Federal Solutions at Ameresco. “Throughout our planning process, we focused on Cannon’s key project objectives to reduce energy consumption and enhance the base’s resiliency while advancing the specialized airpower and combat support mission of this essential Air Force installation.”
Construction on the project is set to begin in Q3 2021 and reach completion by Q1 2023.

Since around 2003, it seems the military is becoming a solar PV adopter at it’s domestic base facilities around the U.S.. If something as stalwart and rigid at the military starts adopting solar PV, then the citizens should start doing the same thing in their lives. Just sayin’, there’s a ‘tell’ here that folks need to take heed.
“As a result of these upgrades, Cannon Air Force Base will save approximately $1.1 million in the first year alone and $33 million over the course of the performance period.”
A home solar PV system would not be this dramatic of a savings, but if you could right now install solar PV and get rid of a monthly electric bill, what would you use the money saved every month on? Could you pay your property taxes for the year on energy savings? Could pay for your homeowner’s insurance for the year? Buy groceries, take a vacation? Do this for 20, 30 years and how much money would you save to use somewhere else?
