Typically, upon hearing the words ‘solar power,’ one tends to think of traditional utility-scale and rooftop panels. However, recently, several new solar panel technologies have begun to emerge that have the potential to revolutionize the way we envision solar and energy production entirely.
Unlike their land-based counterparts, floating solar farms (also known as floatovoltaics) are photovoltaic solar power systems that are engineered in a way so that they float on reservoirs, dams and other various bodies of water. These panels offer tremendous efficiency without taking up valuable land or real estate – with lower installation costs than traditional photovoltaic panels.
Another innovation that’s beginning to gain traction is BIPV solar technology. BIPV, which is short for building-integrated photovoltaics, is just that – panels that are literally integrated into the building they are powering. They are designed to blend into architecture, disguised as roofs, canopies, curtain walls, and skylight systems; taking up less space while remaining aesthetically pleasing. Solar trees are another fast-growing trend that harness the power of the sun while remaining visually appealing.
