Tesla announced today that AC bidirectional charging capabilities are now available for new Model 3 and Model Y electrical vehicles paired with the Powerwall 3 home battery. The Powershare Home Backup program was previously only available to Cybertruck owners.
With Powershare Home Backup, customers can draw power directly from their vehicles to power their homes, extending Powerwall backup by two days depending on vehicle type and average U.S. household consumption of about 30 kWh per day. Cybertruck can provide three days of additional backup, while Model 3 and Model Y provide two days.
To participate, customers must own a Powerwall 3, a Wall Connector 3 (or Universal Wall Connector) and have purchased a Model 3 or Model Y after October 1, 2026. Powershare with Powerwall 3 is available for all Cybertruck owners.
“With Powershare Home Backup, choosing a Tesla is no longer just a decision to buy an EV. It’s a decision to invest in home energy resilience,” said Colby Hastings, Tesla’s Senior Director of Residential Energy. “Our vehicles and Powerwall are even better when used together – each increases the value of the other.”
Powershare Home Backup can be enabled on new Powerwall 3 and Wall Connector installations without any additional hardware or electrical work. For existing installations, an installer must confirm that the Wall Connector is in the backup circuit and that the site is adhering to local code requirements. In most cases, the installer should be able to enable the system remotely, Tesla says.
