GAF Energy closes solar shingle manufacturing facility in California

Surplus manufacturing equipment from solar shingle producer GAF Energy is up for auction after the company announced it would close its R&D facility in San Jose, California, and relocate its headquarters to Texas.

Roofing specialist GAF started an energy division and released a nailable Timberline Solar shingle in January 2022. The company initially worked out of a 50-MW facility in San Jose and then opened a second manufacturing location in Georgetown, Texas, in 2023. At last check, the Georgetown site has a 250-MW annual production capacity, and workers produce solar singles consisting of solar cells laminated onto TPO roofing material.

In October, GAF Energy laid off 138 employees in California, effective Dec. 13. The company also announced it would move its official headquarters and concentrate its manufacturing efforts to Georgetown.

“In light of ongoing changes in the solar industry, we are aligning our business and our team to focus on key markets where solar is most compelling for builders and homeowners,” said GAF Energy President Martin DeBono in a statement.

The San Jose site is now auctioning off surplus equipment. A second surplus sale is happening in Texas.

Earlier this year, GAF Energy unveiled its second evolution of the Timberline Solar product, with increased power output. The ES 2 product reached 57 W per shingle.

Solar Power World has reached out to GAF Energy officials to get an update on the company’s solar shingle business in Texas and beyond.
