120-MW agrivoltaic solar project in Ohio approved for construction

The Ohio Power Siting Board approved the 120-MW Frasier Solar project sited in Knox County, Ohio, on Thursday.

“Today’s approval of the Frasier Solar project is a transformative moment for Knox County and for Ohio’s clean energy future. The Ohio Power Siting Board’s decision comes at a time of increasing demand on the grid and concerns from Ohio’s leaders about adequate energy generation in the state,” said Karin Nordstrom, clean energy attorney with the Ohio Environmental Council.

Open Road Renewables, Frasier’s developer, EPC and operator, filed the project proposal with the Ohio Public Utilities Commission in October, 2023. Open Road will build the array on approximately 840 acres in Clinton and Miller townships, according to the project’s fact sheet.

The array will use single-axis solar tracker project and require additional construction of utility facilities, like transmission lines and access roads. The project will integrate agrivoltaic practices, including sheep grazing, and native plants will be sown on the site.

Through construction and operation of Frasier, local communities are expected to receive investments in schools and public services.

“Through projects like Frasier Solar, Ohio is taking a bold step toward reducing air pollution and combating climate change, ensuring a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come,” Nordstrom said.

We will keep writing to support these important projects, but have been disappointed by the cancellation of Icebreaker here in our area on Lake Erie.
