Powin releases 6.26-MWh BESS Pod Max in 20-ft container

By Kelly Pickerel | May 7, 2025

Share

Powin unveiled its latest BESS, the Pod Max. Delivering 6.26 MWh of capacity in the same 20-ft liquid-cooled container as previous models, the Powin Pod Max offers a 25% increase in energy density over Powin’s standard 5-MWh system — driving down total system costs and maximizing long-term value.

“Pod Max is the culmination of our relentless focus on performance, deployment costs, and scalability,” said Himanshu Khurana, Chief Technology Officer at Powin. “By delivering higher energy density in the same proven form factor, Pod Max enables our customers to deploy more powerful systems with a lower total cost of ownership. This product represents the next evolution of our mission to optimize energy storage at every level of the system.”

At the heart of every Pod Max is Powin’s advanced StackOS platform — a fully integrated software suite that combines energy management system (EMS), battery management system (BMS) and thermal management system (TMS) into a single, intelligent control layer. This integration enables real-time monitoring and control down to the cell level, ensuring industry-leading system availability, optimal performance and built-in safety.

    Unmatched Energy Density:
Packing 6.26 megawatt-hours into a 20-foot container sets a new benchmark for energy density in modular BESS units. For context, this allows grid-scale and commercial applications to deploy more storage in significantly less space—crucial for sites with land constraints or high real estate costs.

    Standardization and Scalability:
Using a 20-ft ISO container format offers logistics and deployment advantages—standard transportation, easier permitting, and stackable design for utility-scale deployment. It also aligns with the industry’s push for plug-and-play systems that minimize on-site integration time.

    Thermal and Safety Considerations:
Higher energy density introduces added challenges for thermal management and fire safety. Powin’s ability to safely manage this in a compact footprint suggests significant progress in battery management systems (BMS), cooling solutions, and fire suppression technologies.
