NYSERDA investing $5 million in New York energy storage research, deployment

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) today announced over $5 million is now available to support energy storage technologies in New York that can harness and provide stored energy to New York’s electric grid. The initiative advances development of scalable long duration energy storage and other advanced battery energy storage solutions that can help integrate existing energy resources into the grid to meet energy demand during peak times and reduce the state’s reliance on fossil fuels.

“The possibilities created by innovative energy storage solutions can safely deliver more reliable electricity to New York communities as part of building an affordable and resilient zero-emission future,” said Doreen M. Harris, NYSERDA president and CEO. “This critical funding will help cultivate the most promising technologies to help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels, improve air quality and manage energy costs.”

The competitive solicitation, offered through NYSERDA’s Power Generation and Storage Innovation Program, seeks qualified proposers to develop and field-test electric, chemical, mechanical and thermal-electric long duration or advanced battery energy storage solutions; including adjacent technologies like devices, software, controls and power electronics.

Other complementary technology solutions that can be considered include those that decrease energy storage total hardware and installation costs, improve performance and demonstrate integration with the grid. Only solutions that are ready to be manufactured, scaled, demonstrate public benefits and quantify all energy, environmental and economic impacts will be considered.

“Long Duration Energy Storage and other innovative energy storage technologies will provide critical services to the electrical grid supporting reliability, infrastructure efficiency reducing cost, and enabling our clean energy goals,” said William Acker, executive director of NY-BEST. “NY-BEST applauds NYSERDA’s leadership in advancing the development and deployment of these vital resources.”

This funding program, formerly known as the Renewable Optimization and Energy Storage Innovation Program, has awarded more than $30 million to over 20 projects, supporting technologies like hydrogen, zinc hybrid, vanadium flow and iron-air battery advancements, and hydroelectric storage. NYSERDA’s Innovation and Research program is deploying approximately $1.2 billion over 15 years as direct research investments and commercialization support. To date, more than $800 million in investments have supported more than 700 companies and made approximately 300 products commercially available to individuals, businesses and utilities.

Funding for this initiative is through the Clean Energy Fund.
