As the House Ways and Means Committee begins planning the government’s 2025 budget under President Trump, 21 House Republicans have signed a letter asking committee chair Jason Smith (R-MO) to preserve current energy tax credits.
Led by Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-NY), the letter echoes sentiments from a similar one last summer that was signed by 18 House Republicans asking Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to preserve the IRA.
“As Members of the House Republican Conference, we write to emphasize the importance of prioritizing energy affordability for American families and keeping on our current path to energy dominance amid efforts to repeal or reform current energy tax credits,” the March 9 letter reads.
The Republicans note that the IRA’s long-term certainty is critical for developers to plan and finance home-grown U.S. energy projects.
“Many credits were enacted over the course of a ten-year period, which allowed energy developers to plan with these tax incentives in mind. These timelines have been relied upon when it comes to capital allocation, planning and project commitments, all of which would be jeopardized by premature credit phase outs or additional restrictive mechanisms such as limiting transferability,” the Republicans write.
The IRA has also received proactive support from 17 state attorneys general, who wrote a letter to Congressional leaders asking them to protect the legislation at the start of the year.
