Verogy, a Hartford, Connecticut-based solar energy developer, completed a 64-kW rooftop solar energy project at Econo Lodge in Old Saybrook.
Econo Lodge owns the system and will use the clean energy it produces to power its business. The 160-module array will produce 70,274 kWh of renewable energy every year
“Econo Lodge is a prime example of how going solar can be a smart way for businesses to reduce their electricity costs and increase customer satisfaction,” said William Herchel, CEO of Verogy. “We’re thankful for the opportunity to help a local Connecticut business take advantage of all the benefits that renewable energy has to offer.”
In addition to cost savings from the rooftop solar project, Econo Lodge received financial support from Connecticut’s Zero Emissions Renewable Energy Credit (ZREC) program. Econo Lodge received a ZREC contract which served as the main funding source for the project, offsetting nearly 80% of its costs.
“Verogy provided us with extensive support and expertise through every step of the solar energy process, ensuring successful completion of this project,” said Mayur Solanki, owner of Econo Lodge Inn & Suites in Old Saybrook. “Our rooftop solar array will offset half of our energy costs, which will help us better serve our customers in Old Saybrook.”

Now let’s keep in mind the many previous years the rote IOU electricity providers foisted statements pushing the idea of “Will never pencil out”, “Doesn’t pay their “fair share” of O&M, “Will increase their neighbor’s electricity rates”. This is Connecticut, not the desert Southwest with 6 to 10 sun hours a day. This business can offset 50% of their energy bills each month, with the adoption of about 33% energy storage capability this Econo Lodge could off set energy demand charges and grab maybe up to 25% more electricity cost savings each month, without adding solar PV panels. Just being able for a commercial property to have the capability to “clip” electricity capacity demand charges for just a few hours allows more savings of energy that is shifted from the solar PV generation portion of the day into night time and the rate spiking demand charges portion of the night.

Hello- what was the approximate overall installed cost of this roof system? Forgetting about the credit/grant… Thanks-
