S-5! develops solar module skirt for metal rooftop arrays

By Billy Ludt | August 25, 2021

Metal roof attachment technology provider S-5! will introduce its new PVKonceal solar solution next month at Solar Power International (SPI) in New Orleans, Louisiana.

A rendering of S-5!’s PVKonceal module skirt.

The PVKonceal module skirt is the newest addition to S-5!’s PVKIT 2.0 direct-attach solar solution for metal roofs. It conceals the lower edge of the PV modules as well as all mechanical and electrical components and discourages animals, debris and other unwanted objects from getting under the solar array.

Team members, including the director of solar business, Mark Gies, will be on-hand to explain the features and benefits of this new offering from S-5! at booth #1319 at SPI.

Now don’t get me wrong, I think this shield is great, but the one thing that has not happened often but has happened is wasps attaching their nest to the hardware or racking underneath the solar panels and coming out to play when you are trying to clean the panels. The cleanest system I’ve run across so far is the GAF installation system that puts panels right down on a shingle roof and there are snap on framing that covers each side and top and bottom of the array. The problem here is that you could also have panel temperature output degradation because of losing air flow under the panels, particularly during a hot summer day.
