Southern New York school district is now fully powered by solar

It’s full solar ahead for the Maine-Endwell Central School District in Endicott, New York. The district completed a 6,240-panel solar project installed across 15 acres and district-wide, Maine-Endwell will now generate 100% of its electricity use from the solar.

The system was fully activated by NYSEG on March 23 and is located on district-owned property adjacent to Maine Memorial Elementary School off of State Route 26. The project is currently the largest owned by a school district in New York State to reach 100% solar offset. The PV array was developed and constructed by Renovus Solar.

“Through visionary leadership and foresight, the Maine-Endwell Central School District and Renovus Solar have created a thoughtful and responsible solution to our electricity needs,” said Jason Van Fossen, Maine-Endwell superintendent. “Equally important, we have created the opportunity for our students and staff to learn the value of renewable energy resources while providing our community with long-term cost-savings.”

In September 2019, the Maine-Endwell Board of Education entered into a pre-development agreement with Renovus Solar and entered into an “Energy Performance Contract” for the construction of the solar field. In addition to Renovus Solar, the district partnered with Eisenbach and Ruhnke Engineering on the project. The district successfully secured New York State Energy Research and Development Authority incentives and solar array construction began in July 2020 and was completed in November 2020.
