For the fifth consecutive year, Conservatives for Clean Energy (CCE) recently conducted a statewide survey of 600 voters in North Carolina to learn more about public attitudes regarding energy issues and the political landscape of the state heading into the 2020 election cycle.
The results of the poll demonstrate that public support for renewable energy and increased competition remains strong.
Key findings in this poll include:
- 85% of voters, including 76% of Republicans, are more likely to support candidates for public office who support renewable energy options such as wind, solar, and waste to energy technologies.
- An overwhelming majority, 77% of voters, including 66% of Republicans and 71% of unaffiliated voters, believe solar and wind energy represent technological advances in energy production and should be expanded to help meet North Carolina’s future energy needs.
- 78% of voters believe that North Carolina’s current system of a controlled utility serving as the sole source of energy is an outdated model and that elected officials need to enact laws that promote innovation and competition to meet our energy needs.
“Technology is changing our society, and voter attitudes reflect that,” said Mark Fleming, CCE president and CEO. “Renewable energy, competition and consumer choice are clear priorities for North Carolina residents. This survey shows that these same voters want elected officials to enact pro-renewable, pro-competition policies.”
The statewide survey was conducted on March 17 to 18, 2019, by political consultants Paul Shumaker and Dee Stewart of Strategic Partners Solutions. The poll results feature a margin of error of +/- 4%.
