Solar energy isn’t just for residential rooftops or utility power plants, an increasing number of commercial facilities are joining the green movement. Sports venues are taking into account their environmental footprint and turning to solar power. One motivation for this shift towards renewable energy is due to the International Olympic Committee’s requirement for environmental protection measures to be an essential part of a successful bid to host the games. Economic incentive proves to be another motivating factor as companies are opting for the financial smart choice of solar power. In recent times, the cost of solar installation and operation has decreased allowing the solar market to broaden its horizons to more commercial customers
At the Indianapolis Motor Speedway 39,312 solar modules generate 9 MW of power. The facility’s solar array is on a 68-acre plot and has the capacity to meet the monthly power needs of 1,000 homes.
