SolarCity and Honda have teamed up to make solar more affordable to Honda and Acura customers in the U.S. The partnership, which is aimed at addressing global climate change, establishes a $65 million investment fund to finance solar projects on the homes of Honda and Acura owners.
The companies say millions of customers and hundreds of dealerships in SolarCity’s 14-state service area may be eligible for the offer, and they expect to accommodate thousands of interested homeowners in the fund.
“By making it easier and more affordable for its customers to use clean power, Honda is reinforcing the fact that solar is the new normal,” said SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive. “This is an unprecedented partnership.”
Honda and Acura customers and dealerships will be able to install solar power with little or no upfront cost. Customers can choose to pre-pay for their solar electricity or pay a monthly payment that will be lower than the cost of their current utility bill, with insurance, repairs and monitoring service included.
In a video that introduces the partnership, SolarCity chief revenue officer Toby Korey and Steven Center, vice president at the Honda environmental development office, tell us about the need and benefits of the program.
“The greatest challenge for humanity is tackling climate change,” Korey says in the video. “We all have a responsibility to address climate change, but more importantly, we have to create an environment that will stimulate that type of thinking.”
“People will take action if you give them the opportunity,” adds Center. Watch the video here:

It would be good if they offered ownership of the solar panels after 2-5 years.
